Hawkers were created as an editorial series for a “Char Kuey Tiao” (Chinese food) stall called “Day Night” located at Bukit Merah Food Centre in Singapore. Through an interview with the owner, I have concluded some insides of the owner’s thoughts which I then make use of to create these illustrations.
When asked what motivates him to run his business, he mentioned how he enjoys seeing customers coming from long distances and being satisfied with what they’ve purchased. A specialty that he has that differs from other stalls were his wax sausage being skin-free.
One of the key factors when creating this series is to have a non-complex style. A simplistic layout is a way to get an outcome that could be well understood the first glance. By incorporating shapes and colors that appear more towards the softer tone, helps capture the attention of audiences of a wider age range.
